Building Your Course: Getting Started with Weekly Content in Canvas

This week, we’re focusing on setting up the first few weeks of content in your Canvas site.

As the semester approaches, now is the perfect time to prepare your Canvas site content to ensure a smooth start for your students. Instead of copying everything over from your migrated site, take a moment to decide what’s relevant, current, and useful for your students. A well-structured start can make a big difference in student engagement and clarity.

Each Canvas course site comes with a weekly content template for the College of Science and Medicine, to provide students with a consistent, easy-to-navigate experience. Take this opportunity to thoughtfully select and present the content that will help your students get off to the best possible start.

Two Ways to Bring Content into Canvas

You have two options for importing materials:

  • From your Canvas migrated site: This version was generated during the bulk migration process and includes content as it appeared in Wattle at the time.
  • Directly from your original Wattle course: This is a great option if you prefer to import specific items or if your migrated site feels cluttered or disorganised.

We’ve created step-by-step guides for both methods to help you choose the best path and complete the import confidently.

Focus on the First Few Weeks

We recommend starting with Weeks 1–3 using the Canvas weekly templates. These help structure content in a student-friendly way. As you build your modules:

  • Import only what’s needed – Keep it relevant and aligned with your learning outcomes.
  • Avoid clutter – Remove outdated files, duplicated content, or unused resources.
  • Organise clearly – Rename items so students can easily find what they need.
  • Match the template format – When pasting content from outside sources (e.g. Wattle), use “Paste and Match Style” to keep the formatting consistent.

Each weekly page includes the following sections. You only need to fill out the parts that apply to your course:

  • Content warning
  • Topic overview
  • Activities
  • To do
  • Readings/references
  • Assignments
  • Other tasks

If your course includes a reading list, please refer to our previous blog post “Leganto – Reading List in Canvas” for guidance on setting this up.
