ANU is moving to Canvas, a new learning management system (LMS) which will be replacing Wattle (Moodle). In Semester 1, 2025, a small number of courses will run in Canvas as a pilot, and all courses will go live in Canvas from Winter / Semester 2, 2025.
What is Canvas?
Canvas is a learning management system provided by Instructure. It is used by a wide range of universities across Australia and internationally, and includes many new features. It will be integrated with the existing platforms used at ANU, such as EchoVideo for lecture recordings and Turnitin for assignment submission (among others).
Some of the benefits of Canvas include:
- A contemporary design that offers a more intuitive student experience
- Learning analytics to assist in identifying students in need of support
- Integrated accessibility features
- An improved mobile experience across different devices
When is this happening?
The transition will occur over 2025 – 2026, with the aim to have all courses in Canvas by Semester 1, 2026. Year long courses such as the MCHD program are planned to transition for the start of 2026.

How would you like to move?
We invite all convenors across SMP (excluding those in MCHD) to fill in the 5 minute survey linked below to tell us about your course, what sorts of activities or resources it has, and any specific needs you have to help us support you through the transition.
Will there be help?
Yes! TELT and CLT will be providing training, workshops, advice, and at-elbow support for convenors to help move courses from Wattle to Canvas. Specific information on how to access help will be available shortly. You can move your course as is or use this opportunity to redesign some or all of your course.
