Plan your Canvas transition

The time has come to begin building your course sites for Semester 2, 2025 in Canvas! In this post, we share a suggested timeline to help you prepare your course site and some suggestions on how to get the process started.

As of mid-March 2025, all convenors should have access to a sandpit site in Canvas, for private practicing and learning, and a migrated site, which contains a copy of all the content from your Wattle site from Semester 2, 2024. From 1 April, 2025, you will get access to your live teaching site with a standard template applied for you to build in.

What should I be doing when?

We’ve prepared a suggested timeline for when to work through the various aspects of building your site. For the next few months, aim to get familiar with the environment and attend some training offerings. Starting in May, start building your Canvas site and meet with TELT to get some help.

Where should I start?

TELT will be sharing weekly posts with suggested resources and activities to help you work on one particular aspect of your site at a time. Aim to give 20 minutes a week to working on your site so that it will progress smoothly.

Activity: Log in and look around

To get started, follow the three prompts below. For guidance on how to do each of these, click on the title which will take you to a short guide.

  • Log in to Canvas

Locate your sandpit site on your dashboard and spend 10 minutes familiarising yourself with the environment.

  • Add your profile photo

Edit your profile to include a photo or image to represent you to students.

  • Edit your notification settings

Canvas can let you know what activity is happening your site – or not – depending on your preference. Adjust your settings so you only get those notifications you want.

Each week, we will share another quick activity with related guides and videos to help you through the Canvas set up.

Upcoming training

Training is now available from the central Canvas team, covering both the basics of Canvas and how to build your course in Canvas.
